Eating Healthier At A Burger Restaurant

Posted on: 4 October 2022

If you're trying to eat a healthy diet, a burger restaurant is probably not the first place you think of eating out. However, it is possible to eat a fairly healthy meal at a burger restaurant if you do your due diligence and plan carefully. Here are some tips to help you make the experience healthier.

Ask for a half bun or no bun.

A surprising percentage of the calorie content of the burger comes from the bun. And while buns can be tasty, they primarily serve as a holding device for the burger. The burger will still be delicious without a bun. You can simply ask for it served bun-less on a plate, and you can eat it with a knife and fork. Or, if the bread is an important part of the burger experience for you, then ask for it to be served with a bottom bun, only. You will get half as much bun but almost the same amount of enjoyment. Ask the kitchen to hold all or half the bun. Don't count on taking it off yourself, as then you may give into temptation and end up eating it.

Stick with low-calorie sauces.

Some burger sauces are surprisingly calorie-dense. This is true of mayonnaise and all of its varieties, for instance. If you can avoid the really calorie-dense sauces, you'll have a healthier burger experience. Good sauces to use instead include mustard, relish, and small amounts of ketchup. (Ketchup contains a lot of sugar, but a small portion isn't too bad.)

You can always ask for your condiments to be served on the side so you can add them yourself and control the portions.

Sub out your fries.

Many burger restaurants serve fries with burgers as a default. The problem is that fries are very calorie-dense and easy to eat in large quantities before you even realize it. If you substitute your fries out for something healthier, you'll reduce the calorie content of your meal significantly. If the restaurant has a seasonal veggie on the menu, ask for that. A side salad with a light dressing is also a good choice.

Eating healthy at a burger restaurant is not as hard as you might think. If you can do away with some bun, the heavy sauces, and the fries, you can put together a decent meal that you enjoy and feel good about. Don't hesitate to ask the server for additional recommendations.
